Hey Savvy friends,
Have you ever seen a giant mussel? Ever considered learning to captain a Halopuni like Moana or beat upwind from Eustatia to St Barts? We explore all that and more in this week's Savvy news.
But first, here’s a fun update!
Avikus Partners with Savvy Navvy

Protecting Endangered Giant Mussels

To protect the endangered giant mussel, anchoring has been banned in Mar Menor, a coastal saltwater lagoon in southeastern Spain.
In late 2024, researchers identified a 300-hectare area within the lagoon where the species has the best chance of survival. With the giant mussel critically endangered, authorities have prohibited boat anchoring in key breeding grounds.
Meanwhile, scientists are developing a captive reproduction program to reintroduce specimens into protected areas.
Member Stories - A Trip from Eustatia to St Barts

We love hearing about the boating adventures our members get up to. So thank you to Jim for sharing these great updates from sail from Eustatia Island in the British Virgin Islands to St. Barts.
“We spent a spectacular day beating from Eustatia to St Barthelemy when the wind uncharacteristically shifted to being from the North. Savvy Navvy helped us dodge squalls and track our progress. The last hour was full-on motoring straight for the harbour to get in by dark.”
–Savvy member, Jim from Colorado.
Do you have a Savvy story to share? Please drop us a message with your adventures, we love to hear what you get up to!
A ‘Moana’ Holiday - Why Sailing in Tahiti is a Traveller’s Dream

Have you ever sailed a Halopuni?
This sleek outrigger canoe, developed by Hawaiian Nick Beck in the early 1980s, is inspired by ancient Polynesian designs. It features a slender nine-meter hull, two outriggers for stability, and a sail. Thanks to modern materials, it is both incredibly fast and easy to manoeuvre.
While paddling remains a popular sport in the region, traditional sailing has become rare among Tahitians. Teiva Véronique is working to change that by teaching local children and introducing adventurous tourists to the art of navigating this remarkable canoe through the breathtaking blue lagoon.
Looking for an alternative way to get on the water?
Until next time…
Thanks for tuning in to this week's Savvy boat updates and thank you so much to our members who have started sharing their adventures with us, we love that you're taking Savvy Navvy with you.
Fair winds,
Hannah and the Savvy crew
